Increased rates of divorce and marriage among over-65s presents a growing risk pension benefits could go to the wrong person on death, if pension scheme forms are not kept up-to-date, Royal London has warned.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has highlighted the number of brides and grooms aged 65 and over jumped by 46% in the space of a decade – from 7,468 in 2004 to 10,937 in 2014.
At the same time, the ONS data suggested over-65s were bucking the declining divorce trend with the number of men aged 65 and over getting divorced increasing by 23% between 2005 and 2015 while the number of women aged 65 and over getting divorced was up by 38%.
