Signia Wealth managing director Carnegie Smyth has kicked off a charity challenge that will see him cycle 1,000km in ten days and take part in a total of ten different Olympic sports after his daily stint in the saddle.

The financial services professional began the 10:10:1000 challenge – to raise awareness of the Sported charity – on 6 August in Belfast and will round off a gruelling ten days at the London Olympic Park.

The route will take Smyth through Scotland and Wales with him covering about 100km a day on the bike and peaking at 130km.

While cycling throughout the United Kingdom he will visit ten Sported member clubs to see how the charity is using sport to transform and turn around young lives.  He will be taking part in such activities as boxing, archery, sailing, hockey and basketball at the end of each day of cycling with the young people who use the club.

Sported support more than 3,000 community sport clubs and youth groups across the UK who deliver Sport for Development.

These groups use sport to take on society’s problems, such as crime, anti-social behaviour and obesity. Sported fund these organisations by offering free business and financial support so that these youth groups can become larger and more sustainable.

Smyth, who is a charity of Sported, said: “I passionately believe sport is one of the most effective tools we have to motivate and inspire young people today. The individuals that run these groups across the country are offered free business and financial support by Sported so that they can become bigger, more sustainable and more effective.

“The charity’s network of volunteer business mentors works with its members on a one-to-one basis, providing expert consultancy on business issues ranging from financial planning and fundraising to marketing and governance.

“Sported supports some amazing community organisations across the UK, so I can’t wait to meet some of the inspirational volunteers and, of course, try my hand at some of the sports.”

Sir Keith Mills, founder of Sported and former deputy chairman of LOCOG, said: “Sported’s members pride themselves on the same values of the Olympics and Paralympics – friendship, respect, excellence, determination, inspiration, courage and equality. So it’s fitting that in the month when these qualities come to the fore, Carnegie takes on this extremely tough challenge for such a worthy cause.”
